Why do people go to therapy and how do I know if it's right for me?

People have many different motivations for seeking psychotherapy. Some people may be going through a major life transition (unemployment, divorce, new job, etc.), or are not handling stressful circumstances well. Some people need assistance managing a range of other issues such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addictions, or relationship problems. Therapy can help provide some of the much needed help with skills to get through these periods. Others may be at a point where they are ready to learn more about themselves or want to be more effective with their goals in life. In brief, people seeking psychotherapy often are ready to begin the process of facing challenges in their lives, and have the courage to seek help.

What Is Therapy Like?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending upon each individual. In general, you can expect to discuss the current issues that are happening in your life, and your personal history relevant to your issues. Depending on your specific psychological and emotional needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns, unresolved emotional issues or trauma, or your desire for more personal development.

The ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you to bring the insights, awarenesses, and tools that you've acquired in your therapy sessions, and apply it all into your life. Therefore, beyond the work you do in your therapy sessions, I will often suggest some things you can do outside of therapy to support your progress and goals - such as reading a pertinent book, journaling on specific topics, noting particular behaviors, or taking action on your goals. Someone seeking psychotherapy wants to make positive changes in their life, and wants help in order to acquire new perspectives, and with effective help and support, begin taking responsibility for their lives, and emotional well-being.Back to
